I (Valerie) am very excited to be offering you a Zentangle® collaborative effort. Over the years I have gotten to know some amazingly talented people through the world of Zentangle who have taken Zentangle beyond what I could have ever imagined. SO… I have gathered three friends of mine to teach a weekend of ZIA – Zentangle Inspired Art, along with me. All descriptions and pictures are below.
I have learned that art in general is very relaxing and satisfying and Zentangle Inspired Art is meditative and healing. Best of all… ANYONE can do it! It is very forgiving with amazing results… no mistakes in Zentangle. We all look forward to sharing with you!
FRIDAY EVENING: 6:30pm – 9:00pm
Shading! Creating Eye-Popping ZIA
Beyond the Basics with Patti Shaffner, CZT
Our Zentangle® creations are perfect just the way they are, minimal shading or even none, BUT…..
Sometimes we hunger for some variety…we see work that astounds us and seems beyond our abilities. Learning the tricks of shading and shadow can make two dimensions pop! Mostly we need to train ourselves to see what is right in front of our eyes. Light and shadow are at play every minute of every day and often affect our mood and our choices about everything from clothing to food!
Begin to notice what you see…
In this class learn the tips and tricks to train your eyes to make choices in shading and shadowing as well as contrast to make your Zentangle® come alive with nothing more than your pencil, pen and tortillion blender.
SATURDAY MORNING: 9am – 12noon
Botanical Zentangle® with Diane Masloroff, CZT
Botanical Zentangles are patterns that are drawn to look Organic or plant like. The artist creates the pattern with a black micron pen and adds to the design with blue pastel pencil and finishes with white charcoal pencil to brighten and highlight the elements in the design. The effect is greatly enhanced on the tan background of the Zentangle® Renaissance Tiles. You will work on both the white and tan tiles. 🙂
SATURDAY AFTERNOON: 1pm – 4pm
Waterfall Album w/Tangles Fragments & Reticular Cover Tile with Mary Kissel, CZT
The Album has seven pockets sleeves that will hold seven Zentangle tiles. They are mounted on a sliding strip. When the tab is pulled they open and spill over like a waterfall. In this class we will also work on the album title page. We will use fragments for the tangles and retuculars for the string.
SUNDAY MORNING: 10am – 1pm
Zendala’s using 4N1’s with Valerie Reilly, CZT
Mandala’s (a spiritual symbol in East Indian cultures representing the universe or cosmos) and the creation of them are very meditative, relaxing and healing. Zendala’s are Zentangle®’s form of a Mandala. The Zendala is 4.5” in diameter, so very easy to work with. In this workshop we will be using Anne Grasso’s 4N1 stencil to create the spaces that will be filled with Tangles. We all will be creating the same designs for the purpose of learning. But the use of the 4N1 stencils enable limitless possibilities for creating beautiful Mandala like Zendala’s, and more!

Diane Masloroff CZT
My interest in art goes back to my childhood days. Hours spent drawing with pencils and charcoal gradually evolved to painting, mosaics and an attempt at pottery. In 1989 I became interested in decorative art, spent two years taking classes from a decorative art teacher in Indiana. I soon became a member of the Society of Decorative Painters and joined a local painting chapter and that was the beginning of over three decades of painting, attending many classes persuing my love of decorative art. In 2003, I founded what is now South Side Brushes, a local chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters. South Side Brushes has remained an active and growing chapter of the national and international group that remains the Society of Decorative Painters today. In 2010 I discovered the art form called Zentangle® and in 2012 became a Zentangle Certified Teacher. Since that time I have been teaching and attending ongoing workshops and classes to further my education of Zentangle art and have had one of my designs published in a Zentangle book. Zentangle has enhanced my artwork and gives me an opportunity to teach the art form to people that never would imagine they could create a piece of art.
Mary T Kissel CZT
She is a very creative and logical person and has been told that she has been blessed with a great deal of patience. Her crafting ability and experience branches out in a broad array of mediums. She became interested in Zentangles in 2010 when she found a book on the art and she was hooked immediately. She found out about a certification classes and decided she wanted to be able to teach this to others. She became a Certified Zentangle Teacher in September of 2012. She loves Zentangle® and always finds way to include Zentangles in her origami, scrapbooking, card making and beading.
She gets a great deal of enjoyment working with people. She has the ability to teach several different ways in order to help bring their ideas to reality. To her, the process is just as rewarding as the finished piece.
She has several of her pieces published in “500 Tangled Artworks” by Beckah Krahula CZT. She has 2 of her tangles published in a German book “Das grobe Zentangle® – Buch” by Beate Winkler CZT. Two of her tangles can be found at Tanglepatterns.com.
